Spark Innovation Accelerator
Spark Innovation Accelerator is a global sustainability innovation challenge at AbbVie. Developed by Becky Sawle and Karen Bireta in 2019, Spark allows employees across 30+ locations worldwide to submit ideas that can reduce AbbVie’s water, energy, and waste. Top ideas are selected, funded, and mentored to bring the projects to fruition and leave a lasting positive impact on the environment.
During my time as a Visual Design Intern at the AbbVie Innovation Center I developed the branding for Spark, as well as numerous assets, including an 82 page magazine.
Branding
During my internship I developed the Spark logo, color palette, brand style guide, magazine, and various additional materials, such as slide decks, videos, and web graphics.
The Process
The color palette was inspired by greens and blues, colors that visually remind us of nature and sustainability.
The logo, after several iterations, stemmed directly from the original Spark imagery, several wind turbines in a field. The creators of the program wanted a clear tie back to that imagery that was used in the original launch.
The logo was used in various branding materials for Spark overall, as well as the individual teams participating in the program. It was featured on the Biologic Single Use Plastic Recycling team’s dump trucks in Singapore (pictured above).
The Magazine
The Spark 2020 magazine* serves as a compilation of the origin, process, and impact of the inaugural year of the program. It tells the story of how 8 teams dedicated time outside of their day jobs to develop solutions to accelerate achieving AbbVie’s sustainability goals.
Spanning 82 pages the magazine includes detailed descriptions and imagery of projects, infographics, testimonials from participants, and more.
