KAM Application Design
The Krannert Art Museum - KAM serves the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the communities of East Central Illinois. KAM has a rich collection of fine art from across the world and offers engaging programs. For this prompt my team imagined that KAM was planning to create an AR or VR program for members with physical disabilities. We designed an interactive application concept that allowed the user to virtually visit the museum and move through the galleries on their phone or tablet. Research was done in collaboration with Sharon Chun, Matthew Waldinger, and David Del Toro Jr. All application designs are my own.
Begin with Empathy
For this website design the most important part was our target audience - KAM attendees with physical disabilities. Our concern was that the current museum structure is difficult to navigate and would make patrons feel uncomfortable. Since our main focus was accessibility, my team envisioned using focus groups, customer experience audits, and surveys to get a better understanding of how our users felt when visiting the physical space. The survey specifically allowed us to gage the level of difficulty patrons had when navigating the space, viewing the artwork, and learning about the artwork.
Ideate
We created an application concept for the Krannert Art Museum that provides additional resources for physically disabled patrons to experience the galleries and museum events in an accessible and enjoyable manner.
Within my application design I focused on organizing the information in an exciting and legible manner. I used images that would reflect the identity of KAM, as well as elicit an emotional response within users - excitement about the exhibitions and accessibility options, and a desire to learn more about specific artworks or artifacts. The color palette I created was intended to match the lavish aesthetic of art museums. The font was specifically chosen for optimal legibility.
